Như voi xuất trận hứng chịu cung tên, ta nhẫn chịu mọi
điều phỉ báng, bởi đời lắm người phá giới (thường
ghét kẻ tu hành ).

an elephant in the battlefield
withstands
the arrows shot from a bow,
even
so will I endure abuse;
verily
most people are undisciplined. -- 320

Như voi giữa chiến địa,
Kháng
cự mọi cung tên,
Ta
chịu đựng hủy báng,
ác
giới biết bao người.

- Comme un éléphant sur le champ de bataille résiste aux flèches tirées
de l'arc, ainsi endurerai-je les injures ; En vérité la plupart des gens
sont de mauvaise nature.

Wie ein Elefant in der Schlacht die Pfeile erträgt, die von einem Bogen
abgeschossen wurden, so werde ich falsche Anschuldigungen ertragen, die
einige Leute verbreitet haben.

Luyện được voi để đem dự hội, luyện được voi để
cho vua cỡi là giỏi; nhưng nếu luyện được lòng ẩn nhẫn
trước sự chê bai, mới là người có tài điêu luyện hơn
cả mọi người.
They
lead the trained (horses or elephants) to an assembly.
The
king mounts the trained animal.
Best
among men are the trained who endure abuse. -- 321

Kẻ luyện voi dự hội,
Người
luyện ngựa dâng vua,
Bậc
tôi luyện thượng thừa,
Chịu
đựng mọi hủy báng.

– L’un conduit un éléphant dressé à une assemblée. ; l’autre
présente un cheval dressé au roi ; Les meilleurs parmi les hommes, sont
les hommes dressés qui endurent l'injure.

Den gezähmten Elephant nehmen sie zu Versammlungen mit; Das gezähmte
Pferd besteigt der König; Der Gezähmte, der eine falsche Anschuldigung
erträgt, ist unter Menschen, der beste.

Con la(178) thuần tánh là con vật lành tốt, con tuấn mã Tín
độ(179) là con vật lành, con voi lớn Kiều la(180) cũng là
con vật lành, nhưng kẻ đã tự điều luyện được mình lại
càng lành hơn (181).

(178): Lừa và Ngựa giao hợp với nhau sinh ra con gọi
là La.

(179): Tín độ (Sidha) là con sông Aán Độ. Giống
ngựa Tuấn sinh ở địa phương này.

(181): Ý nói người chưa điêu luyện thì tánh hung hăng hơn
cả voi ngựa, nhưng khi tu luyện được rồi thì quí hơn nhiều.
Excellent
are trained mules,
so
are thoroughbred horses of Sindh
and
noble tusked elephants;
but
far better is he who has trained himself. -- 322

Quí thay lừa thuần thục,
Quí
thay giống ngựa Sindh.
Quí
thay voi ngà báu,
Tuyệt
thay bậc luyện mình.

- Excellentes sont les mules dressées, ainsi sont les mules du cheval
sindh, complètement entraînées et les nobles éléphants porteurs de
défenses ; mais de loin, le plus excellent est celui qui s'entraîne lui-même.

Hervorragend sind gezähmte Maultiere, gezähmte Vollblute gezähmte Pferde
aus Sindh; Hervorragend sind die gezähmten, großen Elefanten mit den
starken Stoßzähnen; Noch hervorragender sind aber jene, die sich
selbst gezähmt haben.

Chẳng phải nhờ xe hay ngựa mà đến được cảnh giới Niết
bàn, chỉ có người khéo điều luyện mình mới đến được
Niết bàn.
Surely
never by those vehicles
would
one go to the untrodden land (Nibbaana),
as
does one who is controlled
through
his subdued and well-trained self. -- 323

Chẳng phải nhờ voi ngựa,
Ðưa
ta đến Niết bàn,
Chính
bậc tự điều phục,
Ðạt
đến bờ thênh thang.

- Sûrement on n'ira jamais vers la terre infoulée (Nirvana) en montant
ces animaux, l'homme contrôlé par le soi subjugué le fait.

Mit den Reittieren könnte man sich nicht in das unerreichte Land begeben;
aber der Gezähmte tut es zum Nirwana, indem er sich selbst zähmt.

Con voi Tài hộ Dhamapalako(182) (hộ vệ tài sản) đến kỳ phát
dục thì lung lăng khó trị, buộc trói thì bỏ ăn mà chỉ
nhớ nghĩ rừng voi (183) ).

(182): Voi đến kỳ phát dục thường tiết ra một thứ
nước thối tha và tính tình hung hăng khó trị.

(183): Cổ tích kể voi có lòng nhớ mẹ nó là có ý để
khuyên người ta hãy hiếu thuận cha mẹ.
The
uncontrollable, captive tusker named Dhanapaalaka,
with
pungent juice flowing, eats no morsel;
the
tusker calls to mind the elephant forest. -- 324

Voi kia tên Tài hộ,
Phát
dục tiết mùi hăng,
Bất
trị bị giam giữ,
Bỏ
ăn, nhớ rừng xanh.

- Le porteur de défenses nommé Dhanapalako, au temps du rut, incontrôlable,
captif, ne mange plus une bouchée ; Le porteur de défenses se souvient
de la forêt des éléphants.

Der Elefant Dhanapalaka, ist mitten in der Brunst schwer zu kontrollieren;
Angebunden, will er kein bißchen fressen: der Elefant vermißt den Elefantenwald.

Như heo kia ưa ngủ lại tham ăn, kẻ phàm ngu vì tham ăn ưa
ngủ, nên phải bị tiếp tục vào bào thai.
The
stupid one, when he is torpid,
gluttonous,
sleepy, rolls about lying
like
a great hog nourished on pig-wash,
goes
to rebirth again and again. -- 325

Kẻ ngu si ám độn,
Ham
ăn ngủ như heo,
Bạ
đâu nằm lăn đó,
Luân
hồi mãi cuốn theo.

- Quiconque est torpide, glouton, endormi, qui erre de ci de là, ou qui
gîte comme un gros porc nourri d'eaux sales, cet homme stupide, encore
et encore, subira la matrice de la renaissance.

Wenn er träge und überfressen den müden Kopf hin und her rollt
wie ein fettes, gemästetes Schwein: so tritt ein Schwachkopf wieder und
immer wieder in den Mutterleib ein.

Trong những thời quá khứ, tâm ta(184) thường chạy theo dục
lạc, tham ái, ưa nhàn du, nhưng nay ta đã điều phục tâm như
người quản tượng lấy móc câu chế ngự con voi luông tuồng.
Formerly
this mind went wandering where it liked,
as
it wished and as it listed. Today with attentiveness
I
shall completely hold it in check,
as
a mahout (holds in check)
an
elephant in must. -- 326

Xưa tâm này phóng đãng,
Theo
dục lạc đua đòi,
Nay
chuyên tâm nhiếp phục,
Như
quản tượng điều voi.

elle désirait, comme il lui plaisait ; Aujourd'hui, avec attention, je
la maintiendrai complètement, comme un mahout avec son croc, l'éléphant
en rut.

Zuvor wanderte mein Geist wie es ihm gefiel, wohin er wollte, auf welchem
Weg ihm recht war; Heute werde ich ihn geschickt unter Kontrolle halten,
wie jemand mit einem Haken einen brünstigen Elefanten.

Hãy vui vẻ siêng năng, phòng hộ, tự cứu khỏi nguy nan, như
voi cố gắng vượt khỏi chốn sa lầy.
Take
delight in heedfulness.
Guard
your mind well.
Draw
yourselves out of the evil way
as
did the elephant sunk in the mire. -- 327

Hãy tinh cần, vui vẻ,
Khéo
giữ tâm ý thầy,
Tự
thoát khỏi ác đạo,
Như
voi vượt sình lầy.

- Réjouissez-vous dans la non négligence ; Gardez bien votre psyché

de la mauvaise voie comme l'éléphant enfoncé dans la fange se dégage.

Erfreut euch der Achtsamkeit; Wacht über euren eigenen Geist; Erhebt euch
aus dem ungangbaren Pfad, gleich einem Elefanten, der sich aus dem Schlamm
rettet.

Nếu gặp bạn đồng hành hiền lương, giàu trí lự, hàng
phục được gian nguy ; hãy vui mừng mà đi cùng họ.
If
you get a prudent companion (who is fit) to live with you, who behaves
well and is wise, you should live with him joyfully and mindfully, overcoming
all dangers. -- 328

Nếu gặp bạn sáng suốt,
Cẩn
trọng sống hiền lương,
Hàng
phục mọi nguy biến,
Hoan
hỷ kết bạn đường.

- Si vous trouvez un compagnon prudent qui convient pour vivre avec vous,
qui se conduise bien et est sage, vous pouvez vivre avec lui, joyeusement
et attentivement, surmontant tous dangers.

Wenn ihr einen geistig reifen Gefährten findet, der rechtschaffen lebt
, überwindet alle Gefahren, dann geht mit ihm, dankbar, geistesgegenwärtig.
329.
Nếu không gặp bạn đồng hành hiền lương, giàu trí lự,
hãy sống một mình, như vua tránh nước loạn, như voi sống
ở rừng.
If
you do not get a prudent companion
who
(is fit) to live with you,
who
behaves well and is wise,
then
like a king who leaves a conquered kingdom,
you
should live alone
as
an elephant does in the elephant forest. -- 329

Nếu không gặp bạn trí,
Cẩn
trọng, sống hiền lành,
Nên
như vua từ bỏ,
Vương
quốc bị xâm lăng,
Hãy
sống đời đơn độc,
Như
voi giữa rừng xanh.

- Si vous ne trouvez pas un compagnon qui convient pour vivre avec vous,
qui se conduise bien et qui est sage, alors, comme un Roi quitte un royaume
conquis, vous devez vivre seul comme un éléphant dans la forêt des éléphants.

Wenn ihr keinen geistig reifen Gefährten findet, der wachsam, friedlich
lebt, dann geht alleine wie ein König, der sein Königreich aufbigt, wie
der Elefant frei im Matanga Wald.

Thà ở một mình hơn cùng người ngu kết bạn; Ở một mình
khỏi điều ác dục, như voi một mình thênh thang giữa rừng
sâu.
Better
it is to live alone.
There
is no fellowship with the ignorant.
Let
one live alone doing no evil, care-free,
like
an elephant in the elephant forest. -- 330

Thà sống cảnh cô đơn,
Hơn
bạn bè kẻ ngốc,
Sống
lẻ loi đơn độc,
Không
gây nghiệp ác hành,
Như
voi giữa rừng xanh,
Thênh
thang vô tư lự.

- Meilleur est de vivre seul, il n'y a pas de compagnonnage possible avec
un stupide ; Que l'on vive seul, ne faisant aucun mal et que l'on soit
libre de soucis, comme un éléphant dans la forêt des éléphants.

Alleine zu gehen ist besser, mit einem Narren gibt es keine Gemeinschaft;
Geht alleine und tut nichts Schlechtes, friedlich, wie der Elefant in der
Matanga Wildnis.

Gặp bạn lúc cần là vui, sống tri túc là vui, mệnh chung có
được thiện nghiệp là vui, lìa hết thống khổ là vui.
When
need arises, pleasant (is it to have) friends.
Pleasant
is it to be content with just this and that.
Pleasant
is merit when life is at an end.

is the shunning of all ill. -- 331

juste ceci ou cela ; Heureux le mérite quand la vie est à sa fin; Heureuse
est la destruction de toute souffrance.

Ein Segen: Freunde, wenn man sie braucht; Ein Segen: Zufriedenheit
mit dem, was gerade ist; Innerer Reichtum beim Beenden des Lebens: ein
Segen; Ein Segen: Das Aufgeben von allem Leid.

Ở đời được kính dưỡng mẹ hiền là vui, kính dưỡng
thân phụ là vui, kính dưỡng Sa môn là vui, kính dưỡng Thánh
