




























1961: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and Indian Prime Minister
Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 - 1964) in New Delhi, meeting to discuss the
rehabilitation of Tibetans who crossed the border to India during the
Chinese/Tibetan crisis.

In this March 1959 photo, Tibetan leader the Dalai
Lama, sixth from left, rests with members of an escape party who
protected him during his flight into exile across the Himalayas. The
Dalai Lama fled the Tibetan capital Lhasa on the night of March 17,
1959.

In this March 17, 1959, photo, thousands of
Tibetan women silently surround the Potala Palace, the main residence of
the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leader, to protest against Chinese rule and
repression, on March 17, 1959, in Lhasa, Tibet. Hours later, fighting
broke out and the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to safety in India.
Tibetans are about to mark the 50th anniversary of the failed March 10,
1959, uprising.




7 September 1959: The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, spiritual and
temporal ruler of Tibet, arrives in Delhi, on his first visit to the
Indian capital since he sought asylum.
